Costume Instructions
PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO PLAY OR EAT IN THEIR COSTUME (until after May 20).
Please cut all tags that can be seen and feel free to cut off any itchy ones on the inside of the costume.
Please write your child’s name on the inside of their shoes, costumes and anything else they may be bringing with them…especially if they have more than one costume. We CAN NOT be held responsible for lost belongings.
The big list of NO’s:
NO UNDERWEAR should be worn with costumes (think of it like a bathing suit). Pull ups are ok.
NO JEWELRY - To avoid losing them, please remove all earrings, necklaces, rings, bracelets, anklets, etc. BEFORE you arrive at the theater.
NO NAIL POLISH or FAKE TATTOOS – No toenail polish for those dancing barefoot.
NO FOOD will be allowed backstage. Water is allowed. Snacks and water will be provided.
NO CELL PHONES allowed backstage.
NO PARENTS/GUARDIANS will be allowed backstage. We want you to enjoy the performance.
NO SICKNESS – We understand how important the performance is for your child but please don’t bring them if they have a fever, are vomiting or are contagious in anyway. If your child is not well enough to be left backstage without a parent then they are not well enough to perform.
SPAGHETTI – Please be sure to tuck in the ties of your ballet slippers. Cut them short so that there is not as much to tuck in. A big knot shoved inside a ballet slipper can be very uncomfortable.
TOYS – Please do not bring toys. We’d hate for a child to misplace anything. We will provide all the activities to keep them busy backstage.
WHO’S THERE?
HAIR
Hair should be worn in a basic ballet bun for ALL levels and styles (unless otherwise stated).
How to do a ballet bun…
What you will need: hair brush, ponytail holder, bobby pins or hair pins, hair net (should be the same color as the dancer’s hair – (available at CVS, Walmart), lots and lots of gel or hairspray
It is best to start with child’s hair wet (and dirty). Pull hair back into ponytail in the middle of the back of the head (be sure it’s not on top). Be sure that the hair is pulled straight back with NO parts. Try to get bangs back too. Wrap the ponytail around so that the hair looks like a cinnamon bun. Place hair net around bun and secure with bobby pins. All whispies should be secured with bobby pins or clips that are the same color as the hair. Spray entire head with hair spray. Hair should be hard (like a turtle shell). The backstage crew will be checking hair before students go on stage and will most likely add extra crisp to everyone’s head.
Please DO NOT use a “donut” or other bun maker.
If hair is too short to go up in a bun…
Pull hair up out of child’s face and secure with either one barrette in the center or two (one on each side). Secure any whispies with bobby pins and spray with hair spray. Please use BLACK ponytail holder and be sure hair is crispy.

There will be a table to check-in located near the entrance to the backstage/hallway. Parents will not be allowed in the backstage area or hallway. Please put your child’s name on anything that they bring including costume (and all accessories), ballet slippers, tap shoes, jazz shoes, etc. No food will be allowed backstage. If your child is only in one dance they will NOT be allowed to bring a bag backstage. PLEASE CARRY TAP SHOES TO THE BACKSTAGE AREA. Water and nut/milk free snacks will be provided to the dancer’s backstage.
DANCERS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN BACKSTAGE UNTIL THE END OF THE PERFORMANCE.
PICKING UP YOUR CHILD AFTER THE SHOW
One adult per child/family REMAIN IN THE THEATER after the performance is finished. We will announce each group and ask that only parents/guardians of that group enter the side door to the hallway/backstage area. Students will be dismissed by age (youngest to oldest up to level 5/6). If you have an older child or a child in multiple dances, you will be allowed backstage to help your child gather their belongings AFTER the younger students are dismissed. Once you have picked up your child you may then exit down the hallway toward the lobby to meet the rest of your party. The hallway will be one way from the theater doors out to the lobby. Students may not leave the backstage area unless an adult is there to pick them up. Please be patient…we want to make sure every child is matched to a parent. Students in levels 7 and up will remain backstage until levels 6 and under are dismissed to their parents. They will then be released.
Doors to the theater will open approximately 20 minutes before the performance. Tickets will be on sale prior to the show in the lobby. Checks or cash only please, credit cards can not be processed at the theater.
PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOT PERMITTED DURING THE PERFORMANCE. The flash is distracting and dangerous to the dancers and the screen is distracting to those seated behind you.
VIDEOTAPING DURING THE PERFORMANCE WILL BE STRICTLY PROHIBITED as it violates copyright laws. DVD order forms are available at the studio and in the lobby of the theater. The DVD’s are very high quality. We are excited to have Media Creations as our videographer again this year!
Audience members who are caught videotaping or taking photographs will be asked to leave the theater.
Congratulations for making it to the end of your instructions. Did you find the joke?
